Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure is a continuation of the well appreciated Tony Hawk Pro Skater series of games. In many ways, Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure is the typical Tony Hawk Pro Skater game reset with Disney characters and Disney locations. Generally speaking, Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure is an ideal game for young players and for fans of Disney who like to play skateboarding games. Though the die-hard, and older, skateboarding enthusiast likely will find Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure a bit too basic and perhaps a bit too “cute” for their tastes.
In developing the game, the creative team has set the action in different locations to be found in major Disney films, including “The Lion King,” “Tarzan” and “Toy Story.” In addition, as you play Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure, you have the ability to assume the role of one of a number of different characters from these Disney filmed productions. Your character choices include Nala and Simba from “The Lion King,” Terk from “Tarzan” and Buzz, Woody or Jesse from “Toy Story.”
Apart from that, you have two different locations to chose from each of the movie, lending you six different scenic options.
As you start off, you are assigned certain goals that you need to accomplish on a given level. For example, you have to find certain lost items and meet specifically defined challenges. As you succeed, you advance from level to level. Overall, the main objective of the game is to perform favors for the various bystanders that you will encounter on each level.
As you advance, the levels and courses become more complex and difficult. In addition, you are able to perform more complicated tricks and feats to boast your experience.
In general terms, the game actually is pretty quick, not very long lasting…which, again, is well suited to novice players and people who enjoy Disney themed activities. Due to the content, pace and length of the game, it will keep the attention of younger and more inexperienced players. However, a more advanced gamer likely will tire of some of the routines and situations involved in the game itself in a rather short time span.
The graphics and visual arts associated with Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure are decent. However, with that said, if you are a fan of the Tony Hawk series of skater games, you will readily see that the graphics are not as realistic or refined as what is found in a typical Tony Hawk skateboarding adventure.
The backgrounds and environments associated with the different game settings are rather simplistic. Additionally, the characters are not particularly dynamic either. They often appear stiff and awkward on their skateboards…a point which is rather a let down because we expect the Disney characters to look fluid in their movements.
Nonetheless, the visuals are suitable for a younger audience. And, once again, if you are a fan of everything Disney, you will enjoy seeing some of your favorite Disney toons meeting a number of interesting and unique skateboarding challenges in familiar Disney scenic points.
The soundtrack to the game is a welcome creation. The soundtrack features familiar “stuff” from the various Disney movies that have been used in the construction of this game.
On the other hand, the sound effects are less than spectacular. The sound effects generally are pretty common and generic. With that said, they fit the action and do not detract from the movement of play.
Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure, as has been noted previously, is a game that is well designed for a novice skateboarder or a Disney enthusiast. Basic and not complex, as well as being easy to master, the game provides decent challenges to a new or youthful gamer. Further, true Disney fans will be pleased with this new take on these three favorite Disney films and the major characters from these productions.
The game retails for $19.99US, at the time of this review.
