Game Description

It seems like half of the games on GBA are sequels or remakes of games from other systems. There’s not much of a storyline to talk about as usual, go join a fighting tournament against evil demonic warriors that want to win the tournament or take over the world. Here are the twelve characters that you can play with in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance for GBA: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Sonya, Frost, Shang Tsung, Kano, Quan Chi, Jax, Kung Lao, Li Mei, and Kenshi.

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance - Gameplay

The 3D style presented in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance for GBA allows you to step around the playing field and dodge attacks…or you can always block. Also, you can use it to get your opponent from behind and pull off a fatality move. Blood and gore are part and parcel of a Mortal Kombat title and Deadly Alliance is no different. To add to the spilled blood in every hit you make, the blood becomes a part of the environment for that fight and stays there to make the conditions a lot more realistic. Also, most of the classic fatality animations still exist here, so send the kids elsewhere if you’re going to get into this game.

The mini-games that you can unlock are Test Your Might and Test Your Sight, so go test away in the Gameboy Advance version. The most amazing thing is the way the d-pad is used, you can duck, jump, and block easily without having to push more than one button at the same time.

The controls port extremely well to the Gameboy Advance platform. You should be able to pull off your moves better here than previous versions. Use the L and R buttons to move into another fighting style where you can whip out different moves. There aren’t loads of combos available like in a Tekken or Street Fighter but you still have the ability to juggle foes in the air, as you have been able to in older Mortal Kombat games.

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance – Sights and Sounds

The reason Mortal Kombat became popular is definitely because of the sights and sounds they introduced to us. They include the spine rips, heart thrashes etc. …assuming you can pull off the move. There are some quirks with a few of the moves though. Mostly, there is lag when the game tries to catch up with what’s going on, but these are small enough that they don’t affect whether you win or lose.

The music is nothing to rave about and most of the traditional Mortal Kombat voices are retained here. All the sound effects work well; even the grunts and thumps are distinct and clear, they’ll take you away from the music, hopefully.

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance – Summing Up

Between all the traditional Mortal Kombat sights and sounds, and the Test Your Might, and Test Your Sight mini-games, switching fighting styles, excellent use of the d-pad, this is a packed, sold game for Gameboy Advance. The graphics leave a little something to be desired as well as the music, but the sounds are classic and of course you still have the fatality animations. The controls work great for this platform as well.

This is one of the best fighting games available for Gameboy Advance, it’s packed for all features and secrets just waiting to be unlocked. Midway did a good job with this port and even it a little extra something over the rest of the consoles. There are also player profiles you can view for all the stats you’ve racked up, how many fatalities you’ve pulled off, and all your wins and losses.

Overall, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance is worth checking out.
