Harry is bored at the Dursleys’ place and wants to get away to Hogwarts for his second year of learning magic and unlocking the many of the castle’s secrets. That’s when his best friend, Ron, and his brothers, Fred and George, show up in a flying car to take him there early.
Your adventure doesn’t begin here because you don’t take control of the flying car… a great letdown for a lot of Harry Potter fans.
The game follows the original story, and the movie, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. So it’s quite easy to predict what will happen next. Due to the similarity of the story with the book some people may find the plot interesting and others may not feel the same way about it.
The only point in the game where deviates from the plot of the book is when you have to kill the serpent of Slytherin which is done using spells instead of the sword of Godric Gryffindor. This is very disappointing and takes away some of the feel of the game’s originality.
There are a lot of mini games involved in the package that lead to unlockable areas of the castle, give you new spells, enhance your magical abilities and etc. You have to explore a lot of dungeons and the task can be monotonous as the dungeons are almost all the same.
The chores in the dungeons include defeating possessed statues, use spells to levitate stones and in the end fighting a ghost or another boss character. However the result is nearly always the same as you are awarded with new spells and magical techniques.
There are a lot of types of monsters and beasts in the game so it definitely gives Harry a lot of practice for his spells. The mini games also play a major role in this game as they are both difficult and interesting. These small games consist of some events of the story as well…can’t forget about fighting the giant spiders from Aragog’s clan.
The game is also painfully short because it wont take you much time to pass the story mode of the game although it may have a good replay value because all the dungeons and all the secrets of the castle…but then again, going through them once seems like a big old replay in itself!
Although some of the spells have good sound effects, on the whole, the sound is pathetic. There will be times where you would be so frustrated with the corny music that you will want to stop playing the game for good.
There is also a weird music when you enter other places like different classrooms or Hagrid’s cabin you will notice that there is a very corny music playing which could be best related to the Barney song (…happy, happy, happy).
The graphics of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets are (again) plainly disappointing. With a popular franchise, you’d expect the graphics to be the strong side of the game. However, there is absolutely nothing special Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets has to offer. Not even GBA quality.
As it is with high expectations from most popular book to movie (or book to game) conversions, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets fails altogether. If you are not a fan of the series, you can still play it as an overly boring adventure, but real Harry Potter fans can only loath this adaptation as an insult to the original.
Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets (GBA) currently retails for $9.99US at the time of writing.
