Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is a spectacular, admirable and impressive follow up to the well received Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (which was released a bit over a year ago). The game boasts a number of improvements over its predecessor, making the gameplay even more captivating than the extraordinary Sands of Time.
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within picks up the Prince’s tale from where we left off. At the end of the previous game, the Prince had unleashed the so-called “Sands of Time.” As a result, he has found himself pursued by a fearsome beast called Dahaka. This horrific monster destroys anything that lands in its sights.
The Prince, the hero of the tale, has determined that the best – and perhaps the only -- method of eradicating the beast is to travel back in time to kill the Empress of Time who created the Sands of Time in the first place. Not surprisingly, the Prince travels to the Island of Time to do battle with numerous opponents and to work to destroy the wicked Empress once and for all.
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within boasts new and varied weapon combinations that add excitement and challenge to the game itself. As an aside, one of the interesting features of Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is found in the fact that not only can the Prince now wield two weapons at once, but -- being right handed -- the weapon in his right hand actually functions more effectively…truly an interesting touch of realism in a land of fantasy.
In addition to combating opponents throughout the course of the game, the Prince also needs to work his way through a variety of environmental challenges and rigged rooms with a variety of hidden and surprising dangers around every corner (and at innumerable points in between as well).
Perhaps the only downside to the latest go-around with the Prince of Persia series is the fact that the Prince, this time around, seems rather pompous. Whereas the hero of the tale was a likeable chap from head to toe in the initial installment in the series, this time out the Prince of Persia himself comes off as a bit haughty and actually not as likeable and admirable as he appeared in Sands of Time. On the other hand, as the story goes, he has survived some unbelievable experiences that brought him to the point at which he is at in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Therefore, maybe a more forceful presence is justified and understandable…a natural character development, is it?
One of the most significant complaints about the initial installment in the Prince of Persia series was the short length of the game itself. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within has resolved that issue and this time round the developers have come up with a game length that throws up the challenge to the gamers.
Then there were complaints about repetitive combat so the combat sequences throughout the latest installment are original, imaginative and far from repetitive.
All in all, it seems that the developers of the Prince of Persia series really know how to please their audience…now there is one group of developers that comes up with sequels better than the original. Kudos to them for the effort.
As you’d expect from Prince of Persia, the game is visually extremely appealing. The design team and developers have done a magnificent job creating a fantasy world that is eye catching and utterly amazing in its appearance.
The scenic design is nothing short of brilliant. The characters themselves are intricately detailed and convincing.
The only point at which Prince of Persia: Warrior Within seems to stumble is in the audio arena. And, the problems associated with the audio element of the game do not appear to hamper the performance of the GameCube version of the game, which is being reviewed here. In the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game, there are some evident problems. While generally decent, there are some glitches associated with the game that do interfere with a player’s enjoyment of the game. For example, there are instances in which the audio actually seems to get stuck and at other times an expected voice over is blipped away all together.
On most fronts, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is a tremendous follow up to an acclaimed game. It is truly one of the most interesting, intriguing and challenging games to reach the market in the past couple of years. Gamers of all persuasions are certain to be pleased with the purchase.
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, for GameCube, currently retails for $19.99US at the time of writing.
