Game Description

Super Smash Brothers: Melee is the game where the all-stars of Nintendo’s greatest games come together for one ultimate brawl. The game features many playable characters such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Peach, and Link. In this game, it’s all about one thing: smash or be smashed.

Players are given several choices in how they want to play the game. They are given everything from team Melees to Slow-mo. There are even Tiny and Giant Melees. Anyway you play the game, one thing remains the same. The players are constantly battling it out among one another to see who can be the last one standing. Use a combination of moves, items, and wits to defeat your opponents in the wackiest battle ever played.

Introduction

Super Smash Brothers: Melee is a sequel to the original Smash Brothers for the Nintendo 64. It is a one-of-a-kind fighting game in which almost anything goes. Just like the older Smash Brothers, Melee returns with a literal boat load of characters ready to duke it out in one of the zaniest games of all time. However, this edition of Smash Brothers is definitely superior to its former dynamic self.

Graphics

The graphics for Smash Brothers: Melee are fairly exceptional and fit the game rather well. Its seriousness tinges with the way the game operates to create a unique style of game. Gamers will enjoy seeing some of the older settings of various games come to life with newer graphics. They will also enjoy seeing each character with new detail that brings them to life. Gamers will also enjoy seeing their favorite characters lay a big time smash on the other characters in the game. The graphic style makes it easy to recognize who is smashing and who isn’t.

Sound

Call me a nerd if you like, but I actually like the music in Super Smash Brothers: Melee. It has to be the best blend of themes in any video game. You will instantly recognize the background music as much of it is from other games.

If that isn’t enough to grab your attention, the first time the computer taunts you will. Maybe it’s just me, but I love hearing Princess Peach’s, “SwEEt!” when she manages to whack her opponent clear out of the arena. Happy landing! Each character has been given a voice over if for no other purpose than authenticating the game. Players will definitely notice when they’ve been smashed out of the arena or have used a signature move. It’s kind of hard not to notice.

Game Play and Control

This game has to be one of the easiest games to pick up in the history of fighting games. Though each character’s moves are different, they’re all centered on the same general button usage. This makes the game easy enough to pick up in less than even five minutes.

The game’s controls are centered on the A button, which are the simple and very basic smash attacks for each character. It also allows for items to be picked up that landed on the ground such as: bomb-ombs, light sabers, pokeballs, and baseball bats. The B button, combined with almost any direction from the analog stick, will allow for much more brutal attacks. For gamers with a little more confidence, there is also the C stick available for bashing. Sometimes it’s an easier option, at other times it’s not. It all depends on the gamer and what he is used to. The Z button, meanwhile, allows you to grab an enemy or throw away an item you currently have in. The L and R buttons make their way into the game by creating a shield that will last for a few seconds. However, if the shield is up for too long, not only will it shatter, but you will be left defenseless in a sleeping state until someone attacks.

Value

Smash Brothers: Melee is definitely a must-have game for GameCube. It easily has replay-ability It’s a good, addicting game that will have you glued to your seats for hours, even after you’ve played it for months on end. The ability to play in teams, against teams, or in the several special modes easily makes this game enjoyable and well worth that last penny you had in your piggy bank.

Final Verdict

The final verdict on this game is fairly simple. If you haven’t gotten the message by now, I will gladly spell it out for you. Super Smash Brothers: Melee is arguably the best purchase you can make for a fighter on GameCube. You won’t regret buying this game.
