Another great First Person Shooter game in the tradition of Golden Eye and Halo, Time Splitters 2 allows you to shoot opponents including mobsters, monkeys and aliens with weapons ranging from rifles to shot guns to laser guns. The game is played in a wide variety of locations ranging from the Siberian outback to Science Fictions settings. It can be played in both Single Player and Multi Player modes.
Time Splitters 2 story is rather complicated. Earth is attacked by aliens, two Space Marines are sent to save mankind. In order to destroy the aliens, the Marines have to find 10 crystals, placed at various backgrounds that are accessible only through time travel. As you progress from level to level and accumulate the time crystals, newer ammunition and characters are unlocked.
The principal option available for Single Players is the 10 levels, ranging from a Aztec ruins in the 1920s to an automated factory for robots in the 24th century. Apart from the Story Mode, there is also a Challenge mode with interesting tasks such as throwing bricks to smash glass windows, destroying attacking bots with single shots aimed at their head and perfecting the art of camouflage.
The Multiplayer options are very diverse and offer great depth for the game. The Complementary mode involves two players in a split screen fashion and they save earth together. But to add some complexity to the game, all the ammunition and arms available are to be shared between two Space Marines.
Then there is the mode where up to 4 players can battle it out in 15 levels at 3 play speeds – chilled, normal and frantic. Also you can indulge in 16 types of matches, including team death match and bag tag.
Apart from the ever interesting multiplayer gameplay, a major reason for the high replay value is the inclusion of a Map Maker. The Map maker is very simple and intuitive to use. Apart from designing the terrain, one can also specify settings like scoring methods, handicaps and number of kills. The enemy placement and item placement can also be tweaked in the maps.
For a First Person Shooting game, the controls need to be simple and spot-on. Time Splitters 2 controls can be customized and individual control settings can be stored in the user profile. You may need to do some tweaking until you find a control setting you are comfortable with…but the effort makes gameplay all the more interesting and fun.
The Spy ambience comes to the fore with the audio score. The sound effects, especially the gunshots of the various types of guns are very realistically done. Of course, all the characters make their own sounds. You will hear the screech of monkeys as well as the groan of your opponents as they fall down after being shot. Attention has been paid to include voice acting in the various cut scenes so as to help strengthen the storyline.
The game is eye-candy with detailed environments and it looks exactly what it is supposed to, an appealing 3D game. Places like the cavernous Notre Dame cathedral and the unending skyscrapers of Chicago look very realistic. The game runs smoothly at a constant frame rate of 60 per second in the Single Player mode. The Multi player mode is slightly slower but with no noticeable glitches.
The true achievement of Time Splitters 2 is its multi player version with its amazing depth and replay value. The presentation and the production value are good. The music gels with the scenes and the 3D world is rendered beautifully using technologies like anti-aliasing. All in all, Time Splitters 2 is in every manner a better and worthy sequel of the original…worth collecting.
Time Splitters 2 currently retails for $14.99.
