According to Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2, things have gone awry in the most famous and hilarious bunny’s life. His girlfriend, the cute but nonetheless lesser-known Honey Bunny, has been kidnapped. The perpetrator of such a vile act, a witch who despises the peaceful, yet extravagant rabbits, is holding Bugs’ sweetheart hostage. It’s up to the carrot aficionado to rescue Honey, and his quest promises to be an exhaustively interesting one.
Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2 is an action game that lets you control the popular rabbit along a stunning collection of colorful levels. Your main task is to collect keys, which you can then use to unlock the door that marks the end of any stage. With eight keys to find per level, there’s quite a bit of exploration to be done. You have no other choice but to find all the other keys to complete a stage, as you’ll find yourself weeping behind an unmovable door otherwise.
It’s not just a matter of grabbing keys though, as there are also power-ups scattered in each stage. These range from weapons that you can joyfully rely on to show your opponents what you’re made of, to the usual health-restoring items that always constitute a nice boost. Given how the game’s difficulty noticeably increases once the later stages kick in, you’ll no doubt learn to welcome the potions. There are also other power-ups in the form of tools and shields that will aid Bugs during his heroic acts.
Along the way, Bugs Bunny will meet a lot of familiar faces, and such encounters will always result in fiery battles. The amount of mini-bosses you face is ludicrously high, as there are a dozen of them. It is nevertheless weird that the enemy cast includes the zany Daffy Duck and even an oversized Tweety who, by some magical spell, has joined the witch’s side. On the other hand, meeting other personage such as the obsessed Sylvester, the slick Coyote, and the Tasmanian Devil, just to name a few, is not so surprising, given each character’s background.
The game also uses a password feature, which is necessary considering the game’s sheer length with its 28 levels. Crazy Castle 2 is actually a very challenging game, with the enemy count constantly increasing as you approach the final stage while the power-ups aren’t plenty to come by. Things get excessively hard by the end, and it’s obvious that this new Bugs Bunny adventure is targeted towards an older audience, as opposed to the previous game, which was very easy. While Kemco’s effort to remedy to the first title’s lack of challenge is commendable, perhaps they went a little overboard with this second Bugs Bunny release.
There’s no complaint about the controls, as the game uses a simple lay-out with an excellent response time. The lack of a jump button is nevertheless puzzling…especially considering that Bugs is a bunny.
Crazy Castle 2 is visually great with likeable character models and an amazing attention to detail. Backgrounds are equally well done, and there are of a couple of nice extras, such as Bugs Bunny actually turning towards a door when he needs to go through it. Unfortunately, the game suffers from slow-downs that automatically occur whenever there’s a certain amount of enemies on-screen. This can get frustrating, as you find yourself suddenly dying due to the sporadic slowdowns.
Having several themes is a great idea since it adds diversity to the music. However, keeping all of them short and making them repeat over and over again until they become utterly monotonous makes the whole point moot. It’s a pity because the tracks are actually good, but you’re stuck with hearing them loop over several stages, which eventually gets annoying.
Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2 boasts an excellent gameplay and is overall a fine title. The game has a brilliant, long life span and great features. On the other hand, the slow-downs that occur in the later stages can get irritating, and the difficulty, especially towards the end of the game, is a big turnoff.
This Bugs’ adventure currently retails for $5.95.
