NBA 3 on 3 Featuring Kobe Bryant makes full use of the NBA license to present you with a formidable roster selection that comprises of all the teams available in the league. All the players, ranging from the insanely popular stars to lesser-known ones, make an appearance, seemingly urging you to select them. While it’s only 3 on 3 basketball, the teams actually have more players. It is up to you to know when to make substitutions. The key to beating the game remains to use your whole team as effectively as possible by relying on your ability to switch players whenever you want.
In addition, you have the ability to create six players if you ever grow bored of the game’s default players. The Create-A-Player mode isn’t just a quick and negligible one thanks to the wealth of options it offers. You can build your character into a powerhouse in a certain domain, and then swap him against another lousy player in your favorite team. It’s an excellent feature and one that gives the game more replay value since there are various character types you can come up with. By combining this feature with the game’s two player support, two gamers can compete against each other using their newly created characters.
NBA 3 on 3 also has a plethora of features such as the ability to change all game rules and play a full season according to those. You can completely remove the back court violation rule, which can result in strange games with both sides meaninglessly running all over the pitch, waiting for a good basket-scoring opportunity to occur. Moreover, it’s up to you to decide how much time you want to spend with a specific team since you can alter the season length. Of course, there’s also the inclusion of a quick match for those who care only about pitting a certain team against another one.
Beyond all these features, NBA 3 on 3 is a conventional basketball game with all the fabulous and typical action thrown in from regular shots to decisive alley-oops. There are plenty of stunts you can pull off, however, the game suffers from poor mechanics when you’re no longer the attacking side. Indeed, your players automatically go into a defensive stance whenever you lose possession, which makes it hard to control them and effectively steal the ball back.
Unfortunately, the game has rather bizarre controls. Because of the isometric angle, all in-game controls strike off as awkward. Thankfully, you do have the option to change the control setup to make things more logical and thus easier to grasp. The glitch where the controls sometimes fail to register, is not remedied quite so easily though.
The game relies upon the isometric view so familiar to NBA Live fans. Unfortunately, while such a scheme works well in the aforementioned title, it is poorly executed here. The stadiums are blandly designed and have only a limited color palette. The players too suffer from blocky character models and are too generic to even deserve a mention.
The audio is as unimpressive as the visuals with sound effects that bear no resemblance to their real counterparts. They have an overly sharp tone about them, and this gets rapidly annoying. Bearing this in mind, it’s almost a relief that there’s no real music during the matches other than the occasional cues.
NBA 3 on 3 Featuring Kobe Bryant has several good ideas such as the Create-A-Player mode and the ability to change all the season rules and season length. The game is however let down by its poor visuals and awkward, unresponsive controls, and, as such, may not appeal to even the most fanatic basketball fans.
The title currently retails for $11.99.
