Call of Duty is another game that banks heavily on the World War II for it's plot and elements. A first person shooter, the game may not have a unique concept but the execution, gameplay and attention to detail make this a worthwhile title to explore.
It's the Allied forces Vs. the Nazis angle and players get to choose from American, British or Russian soldiers as they take on missions and launch campaigns against the rampaging Germans. The emphasis is on team play as you watch each other's back and players have to make full use of stealth and strategy in order to gain success. The mindless attacks and melee style assault will fall short against the might of the Germans.
Packed with well thought out campaigns, realistic briefings and maps, well behaved sprites exhibiting great amounts of realism and fast action gameplay, Call of Duty is an intense gaming experience and is one of the better games that has found it's way to the top of the massive mountain of war based First Person Shooters.
It's fairly easy to don your uniform and get into the thick of action in this game. Pick which team you want to be on, tighten your grip on your gun and wade through a series of levels that feature intense action and an amazing amount of realism. Aim, shoot, dodge, hide and generally fight your way through.
Campaigns are diverse and kick off with a briefing that features realistic voice acting and character animation. Team plans are formed based on logical and tactile data rather than fiction, maps are authentic looking and information that you are supplied with is backed by realistic visuals.
One of the stronger points of the game is the AI as both your AI controlled team and your enemies are smarter and exhibit real world behavior. Team intelligence is of such high levels that should one member have to fall back, the other will automatically cover for him. The emphasis that this game places on teamwork is evident as you are as dependent on the survival of your team members as they are, on yours.
The gameplay is slick and character rendering and responsiveness are near flawless and these act as the glue that binds players to the game and makes it an addictive outing.
Realism is the keyword here and the developers have picked their elements and given them the right kind of treatment that brings forth the true essence of WWII. They've limited the blood and gore and put real effort into special effects such as smoke, fire and explosions.
The game packs a powerful punch in the form of authentic war time sound effects, great voice acting and a rich background score, all of which add immense value to the overall experience.
One of the best FPS war games to hit the Mac (…or any platform that matter). It's a great blend of tight plot, superior AI, beautifully rendered graphics, rich sound and well thought out campaigns. And if that’s not enough, you can test yourself against real gamers online to increase the re-playability even further.
Fans of war games and FPS stand to gain a rewarding experience with Call of Duty…a must have.
