Game Description

What’s not to love about a young raver chick sporting a ponytail who runs around fighting giant insects? Origin of the Species features a girl named Dirt who was experimented on by the military. Breaking away from her abductors, Dirt is on a mission to plot her revenge against her captors. On her quest, she gets bombarded by multiples of giant insects, all of which were military experiments gone wrong. Interested? Read on.

Origin of the Species Gameplay

Gamers will soon realize that Origin of the Species is one of the strangest games ever created. Have we mentioned that Dirt carries a teddy bear back pack, and it moves? Enough said.

While it’s horrible to think that the military could be doing its experiments on a young woman, Dirt did get some pretty awesome abilities out of the whole ordeal. Her weaponry skills are out of this world, and she also comes equipped with telekinetic powers. Cool huh? Her weapons include pistols, grenade launchers and sub machine guns just to name a few. There are also a few original weapons included in the game as well. These range from graviton beams to pheromone guns.

The powers that Dirt now possess have some cool effects on the game. She has the ability to cast a slow motion affect on everything, giving the gamer some time to breath or to gain an extra second to perfect a blow that is about to be delivered to her enemy. This effect may cause recollections of the Matrix in some gamers. Be warned.

Origin of the Species was created to be an action game, but incorporates a little RPG into its format. Style points are used to increase certain abilities such as sniping, direct combat, stealth and more. They can be used at the start of every level, to help Dirt in her mission. However the style points are used are used is up to the gamer, and it really doesn’t affect game play that much.

The variety of enemies in the game is the highlight of Origin of the Species. Many of the enemies are mutated, not to mention huge, insects that are the result of top-secret military testing. The bugs aren’t the only pest problems in the game, however. Dirt will have to keep her eye out for the military bums that did the testing on her in the first place.

Origin of the Species Graphics

The animation is not quite where it should be. The characters look blocky, as do the environments. Some of the effects of Dirt’s powers were played out nicely, but the rest of the graphics just seem to slip down the drain. Major glitches plague the game as well, like characters just falling through the floor, making gamers restart just to make it through the level. Also, every weapon that dirt uses looks exactly the same, so you won’t be able to tell one from the other until it is used. The textures of objects in the game are non-existent. What little detail used is very poorly drawn.

Origin of the Species Audio

The audio is, simply stated, horrible. Filled with crazy sound effects and loud melodies, this game does not bring music to a player’s ear. When weapons are fired, the weapons don’t even sound near realistic. Wacky sound effects are used when weapons go off, which is a bit strange. The music over shadows the voice acting, and gamers will strain to hear what is going on in the game. And just a heads up, it’s hard to follow a storyline if you can’t hear what is being said...yes, that was tongue in cheek.

Final Verdict

The graphics in Origin of the Species are pathetic, along with the audio. Major glitches plague the game throughout, and may be enough to annoy gamers to the point of no return. Stay away from this game, unless you’re into freaky stuff with major bugs.
