Sweet smells lure customers in from the sidewalk into a world filled with layered cakes, cream-filled pastries and frosted cupcakes. But not everything about this game is sweet. A lot of work and strategy is involved as well. Players start off easy, with just a few customers, but as their business grows, so does the amount of headaches. What ever could possibly go wrong does go wrong, at the wrong times, and players will cater to a wide variety of characters. If gamers thought cake making was easy, think again. If they are up to the challenge, then grab the eggs and get down to the baking.
You play as Jill Evans, a young woman who just got back from her culinary training to find that her grandparent’s bakery had been put out of business. A company called Mega Mart had pushed the small bakery out of business. Determined to get the bakery back on track, Jill starts selling cakes right out of her house. After selling enough cakes to buy the building that housed the bakery back, Jill opens the bakery again.
The game starts out easy enough, as gamers only have to serve a limited amount of customers. As Jill’s bakery gains popularity her customer base grows, and her business has to grow right along with them. Cash that Jill receives for her awesome confectionaries has to be put right back into the business in the form of updated and speedier ovens, frosting machines, and all of the other items that are needed to run a business successfully. These items are needed to keep up with the demands of the customers. Soon after the easy levels have been completed, the customers start ordering more complex and trying orders. After a few levels of chaotic play, you will most likely get frustrated that you can’t keep up with everyone’s orders, or can’t keep your customers satisfied. It just means you have to try harder; it is a game after all. And games need to be challenging.
As Jill earns more money in her bakery, she will have a chance to take a break from all of the frustrations and craziness of the bakery, and spend some time shopping for her business. This is where all of the fancy gadgets for the kitchen are purchased. Gamers can browse through all of the items that the game has available, which should take their mind off the customers for at least a few minutes.
The characters that enter Jill’s bakery are a site to behold. Well, some of them anyway. Jill will have to cater to some of the strangest customers that she has ever had, including the Easter bunny and Dracula. Be sure to take Dracula’s order first. Get him to leave quickly or he just may scare off all of your customers.
Graphics in the game are done very well. A lot of bright and colorful gameplay is incorporated here. The graphics are clear and sharp, the way graphics in a game should be and everything is detailed quite nicely. A nice change from all of the dark colors used in most games now-a-days.
The audio sounds exactly like what would be played in a large grocery store. The music fits the game, as the game is set in a bakery of course. Voice acting in the game is extremely limited, but what little that was done is done in a good quality. The music doesn’t overpower the voice acting at all. The sound effects in the game are a bit cartoonish, but that is to be expected as this game is geared towards a younger audience.
This game is a spin off of Diner Dash. Younger audiences will love this game, as will parents of the younger audience. This game may be a bit disturbing to teenage audiences though. If gamers are into business management and think they can keep up with the fast pace of the game, and aren’t too concerned with kiddish graphics, then by all means give this game ago, you might actually have a lot of fun.
Not a bad buy at $19.99 either.
Video game information minus the fat.
