Doom was launched in 1993 and after eleven long years ID has finally launched the next version, Doom 3. Typical of the series, Doom 3 is also a first person shooter game.
The plot of Doom 3 unfolds on the planet Mars at a research facility where deadly creatures have broken loose and killed everyone. You must go and eliminate all the monsters. Even with a straightforward shooter game like Doom, gamers are more likely to be impressed by the game’s presentation than any other aspect.
The story is not very impressive as you are very likely to be clueless about the proceedings at some junctures in the game. The whole exercise seems pointless, just pick up guns and aim at the evil creatures, you might even feel lost in the entire situation. But basically, you going to play the part of a one-man army, fending off the evil creatures that are trying to attack you.
Over the course of the game you come across new weapons… and new monsters to shoot down with them. Most of the battle is at close range and if you’d like to make things interesting you can use grenades to ward off large groups of enemy. However, the only glitch is that these grenades bounce off the enemy and, being human, you are a lot less thick skinned so you take more damage than they do.
With Doom 3, the developers seem to have tried to drive home the horrors of fighting a foolish enemy. Initially, the creatures brainlessly charge at you, and if you can adapt to aiming at a beast standing nose to nose with you, you’ll probably survive the horror seeing a close up of your feared adversaries.
As the game progresses, the enemy develops a few ounces of common sense and starts to take cover instead of jumping in your face to be hit. The bigger these creatures get the more tactful they get in approaching you. Consequently, it is much tougher to take them down.
The developers purposely chose to add a depressing atmosphere to the station on Mars. The whole area is dark and the lighting is excellent to create an unsettling mood. The light placement is great and the effects generated really makes you startle. Flickering lights creates some bizarre shadows that make you jump out of your seat. When lights go off all you see is glowing eyes jumping towards you…
The audio effects are also a plus point of the game. The creepy setting includes voices that guide you and warn you from creatures you are going to face. Without these audio effects Doom 3 could not have created the intense atmosphere required to make the game anything interesting.
Doom 3 is a good FPS with high quality audio and graphics. Although the gameplay is nothing close to inspirational, and the AI (… or lack of it) makes the enemy more pitiable than dangerous, the atmosphere in Doom 3 still makes the game playable for thrill seekers who don’t mind the lack of challenge.
Doom 3 currently retails for $19.99US at the time of writing.
