Indigo Prophecy is an exceptional blending of intriguing plot and challenging game play. Indeed, on so many levels, when it comes to a well defined plot and a well tuned game, Indigo Prophecy rides above the pack.
The game begins with a truly unique and mind bending scenario. In the opening sequence, you are introduced to Lucas Kane, a handsome fellow who is rather down on his luck. The player meets up with Lucas Kane in the men’s room of a New York City diner. Immediately after being introduced, as if possessed Lucas ends up savagely attacking another man in the restroom. During the attack, Lucas returns to his senses at the precise moment that you take control of the hapless fellow’s suddenly warped life.
Because you’ve become Lucas Kane, you are compelled to solve the riddle of his behavior and keep him from harm and danger along the way. Truly, the intricate open sequence of the game gives you an excellent feel for the complex case that lies ahead. From the moment you take control of Lucas Kane, you have make continual decisions as to what to do next: flight or flee, attack or hide.
Throughout the playing of Indigo Prophecy you discover how much depth there is to the character. Indeed, the plot and characterization is so intense that you are taken on a truly wild roller coaster ride, feeling as if it is your life truly at stake as you wander through Indigo Prophecy.
The game is populated by two other main characters, Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles. Valenti and Miles are the two detectives assigned to solve the murder that Lucas -- you -- have committed at the outset of the game. Even these two characters have a depth and believability that is not often found in high-tech gaming.
Of course, lurking in the dark are the true villains, the culprits actually responsible for triggering Lucas’s murderous conduct at the start of the action.
In the final analysis, your enjoyment of the game is rooted in your appreciation of the plot. But, again, the plot is intensely interesting and draws a player in from the first sequence.
Generally speaking, the graphics and visuals associated with Indigo Prophecy are basically solid, although not bell ringers. There actually are a few instances within the game when the characters move in a noticeably unnatural manner. Indeed, Indigo Prophecy is a bit more stilted and jerky when played in the PS2 but you can expect a smoother gameplay on the Xbox.
With that said, the details of the individual characters in the game are done quite nicely. Indeed, for the most part, the main characters are created in an unusually lifelike fashion…though some of the peripheral characters are not as intricately created and do not look quite as lifelike as their major counterparts.
The scenery visuals and background designs associated with the game are smartly done. The background visuals add an appropriate sense of foreboding to the game itself. The only major problem is the camera movement which is annoyingly disorienting at times.
The audio elements of Indigo Prophecy really bring the game alive. The designers have brought together some excellent actors to do the voiceovers and the actor playing and voicing Lucas Kane brings the character utterly to life.
The soundtrack is actually rather brilliant. Composed by the gentleman who arranged the music for the films “Lost Highway” and the intense “Mulholland Drive,” Angelo Badalamenti scores high marks for his work on Indigo Prophecy. The soundtrack adds a vibrant sense to the game.
In summary, Indigo Prophecy is a brilliant work. If you are a gamer who enjoys complex, interesting and intertwined plots together with complex action, Indigo Prophecy is a perfect choice for you. The game will provide you with hour upon hour of true thrills and intense excitement.
The game currently retails for $39.88US at the time of writing.
