Unlimited Saga centers around The Seven Wonders. The Wonders are a group of ancient structures shrouded in mystery. There is a legend that hidden within these wonders are the powers of ancient gods and that the release of these powers will bring upon the Golden Age. You are given the opportunity to play 7 characters and discover how their stories intertwine. Play as Laura, Mythe, Kurt, Ventus, Ruby, Armic, or Judy and discover the secrets of the Wonders.
Unlimited Saga is about the intertwining of 7 lives. Before the game beings, you can choose which character’s story that you would like to follow. There is a brief description about the character and a note from the creators as to what playing a certain character will be like. After choosing your character, you walk in their shoes and you will discover what desires or secrets drive them on their quests. Along the way, you will encounter several of the other 7 characters at different parts of the game as you work your way through the game. You must play through each of the 7 characters to truly understand the whole story and receive a special ending.
Each character has their own weapons and abilities. It is a good idea to become familiar with the new character before heading into dangerous fights. Some work better as fighter while others should stick with magic. You can purchase weapons at local Bars or you can purchase materials and head over to a blacksmith and make your own. Weapons are fragile things and will break after a number of uses so keep a close eye on them as it is very inconvenient o have your weapon break in the middle of a boss fight.
Unlike many RPG’s, there is little in the way of character movement. The game progress as much by text conversations as it does by a board game like movement system. Your character resembles a token found on a game board and the character makes one hop (or movement) at a time. Each screen is a board decorated with landscape in which the goal is to either find the exit or to locate a particular person or object. If you are traveling to a town, you may pass through 3 different boards to get to your destination. You can also travel through castles and other indoor locations using the same board game landscape.
Monsters are placed randomly throughout these boards. When you hop locations, a screen pops up and lets you know if you landed on an inhabited circle. If you land on a circle which contains an enemy, a slide screen will show you the enemy you confront. Depending on the type of enemy, they will either attack you immediately or simply leave you alone. If they leave you alone, you can initiate the battle with the enemy.
When you fight, you can have up to 5 characters join you in battle. When a character’s turn comes up, you can choose its attack via a weapon or a magic ability. Once the attack is chosen a wheel appears and the player must hit the “X” button to stop the wheel. The wheel can be populated with a variety of attacks. The attack that is carried out is determined by the color that the wheel stops on. Magic attacks are carried out in the same fashion, except the color determined the elemental type.
Unlimited Saga is handled much like an anime magazine. There are no long CGI movies that play out. Cut scenes are handled by drawn characters and dialogue boxes. There is little in the way of moving animation. The music and sound effects are basic and complement the style of drawing. When the characters hop to a new location, you actually hear the corresponding jumping noise. Board levels have a simple classical soundtrack that can intensify depending on what stage you are on.
Unlimited Saga is the story of 7 diverse characters and you find out the larger story by working your way through each of their tales. It is neither easy, nor a quick game and some of the characters stories are very difficult to complete. You might need to take on additional quests to gain stronger weapons and to increase your characters skills and strengths.
To complete the whole adventure, you will repeat areas several dozen times and you might even fight the same bosses. It can become very tedious to constantly backtrack over the same places and fight the same enemies over and over again. The music isn’t very inspiring nor is the stiffness of all of the cutscenes very interesting. The overall story is entertaining but it gets bogged down by the constant repetition. If you are interested in trying a new type of game, then Unlimited Saga is a good game. However, if you want something fun and easy to play, stay clear of this one.
The game retails for $6.66, at the time of this review.
