The name, Metal Gear, goes back to a distant year. It has come a long way, from system to system, until it hit Playstation, where it exploded into superstardom. Now, it comes to the PSP, in a strange twist of style and it’s not quite like any of the other versions. It’s a card game…
Of course, there is still is a hidden all-powerful weapon that you have to find, the “Pythagoras”, that terrorists are demanding while they hold hundreds of innocent civilians hostage.
Whip out the weapon card to attack and inflict damage. Swipe the action card to use some stealthy moves and continue infiltrate areas without being noticed. You can also call on the support of other characters with the character card. You may be very confused at first if you’re a previous player of Metal Gear games. Don’t worry it doesn’t take long to learn how to sneak around one step at a time. You can unlock a special mode once you’ve been through certain parts of the game which allows you to link with another PSP user and play against him. However, you can do that only if they are at the same point as you. You can also exchange the file.
Each card costs a certain amount of points, which can limit the number of cards you play per turn. Lots of strategy is involved in picking how many cards to use in one turn. Sometimes it’s best to equip your weapon card, which allows you to counterattack against the enemies when they attack you. It’s like a free card in itself and saves multiple cost points.
Having the correct order of your cards is also very important. Make sure you know exactly what order you’ll need your key card or something else that jam up your time causing you to set off an alarm. The battles are fought on grids similar to other video game card games or turn based strategy games. Characters do add a bit of comic relief sometimes. The extra mode gives the game a lot more replay value (…other than collecting every card and character known to man).
Don’t expect any rich cinematic sequences, as Metal Gear Acid’s storyline is played out through single frames and text. The graphics are not all that impressive for the PSP. The animations and enemy movement repeat more than enough to get on your nerves. There is no character voice. There are nice gunshots, rocket explosions and ambient techno beats to move you through your strategy planning though.
There are tons of cards throughout the game, so you’ll probably want to replay the game just to find all the cards, and new characters with all their special abilities and weapons.
It’s very simple to save on the PSP, you can stop at anytime, in the middle of a fight or waiting for the next patrol to walk by and immediately resume where you left your game when you turn it on again.
Metal Gear Acid provides an interesting experience…it’s like a board game. It’s like Yu-gi-oh in a slight way or maybe the Magic: The Gathering card game. Of course, it’s also like the previous Metal Gear games with similar tactics, techniques and weapons. The bosses are something to sweat over though, keeping with the tradition.
It’s a solid game as the next sequel/extension to the metal gear series and its worth a go if you are interested in such games.
Metal Gear Acid currently retails for $34.99US at the time of writing.
