When the Street Fighter series first hit the electronic gaming scene, it paved the way for fighting games for generations to come. Now the developers at Capcom have brought Street Fighter Alpha Max 3 that aims to transform the PSP fighting games forever. While everyone knows that the PSP control system wasn’t built for fighting games, Capcom has developed a fighting game that is easier to control on the portable console.
Basically Street Fighter Alpha Max 3 is perfectly transferred to the PlayStation Portable from the original game. It features tons of game modes and characters for the gamer to play through, which will keep gamers occupied for a long time to come. The game features over 40 characters, it’s like a fighting lover’s paradise inside a pretty little cartridge. Gamers will control their characters with the analog control stick or the d-pad. The top row of the control is dedicated to punches while the bottom is dedicated to kicks. Heavy throws are triggered with the L button and heavy kicks are triggered with the R button. Not much to master there, but add in all the special moves and things could get a bit complicated.
Street Fighter Alpha Max features tons of modes for gamers to enjoy. There’s an arcade mode where players will choose a character and play up against ten computer opponents and finish with an ending unique to the gamers’ chosen character. Training mode lets gamers practice their moves before jumping into gameplay. There’s also an edit mode where you can customize characters and their abilities and a World Tour mode where gamers will train their characters, climb their way to the top and find fighting stardom. This by far is more in-depth play than any other mode in the game. Many mini modes make up the game as well.
Alpha Max also features multiplayer gameplay. While there is no online mode, there is still a lot available for fighters to sink their teeth into. The multiplayer features 4 modes; Vs. mode allows player to lock horns head to head and Team mode lets players create a party of 4 and go head to head with another customized party. There are also two other modes that aren’t as basic as the afore mentioned. Variable battle lets two players battle it out against a computer opponent, and the Dramatic mode where 3 human players battle it out head to head. These modes of gameplay call for some re-strategizing so watch out.
The graphics are great, and may be even better than in the original version. Stunning 2D graphics, colorful and vivid backgrounds and cartoon-like animations make this game more enjoyable. Players of the original will love this aspect of the game, because the graphics will feel so familiar.
The voice acting is superbly recorded, but may sound a bit over dramatic at critical times during battles. However, the score is original and sets the mood for intense battle scenes. The sound effects are also very nicely presented through out game play.
Gamers who have enjoyed the Street Fighter series on regular consoles will definitely have to pick up Street Fighter Alpha Max 3. So will gamer who love fighting games, and even non-fighters should take a stab at this one. It’s totally worth the $39.99 price because of all the features that it brings to the table.
