Jack Carver is back for the second installment of the Far Cry series. Far Cry Instincts Evolution offers gamers a new story as well as new islands and maps to explore and conquer. Steven Dorff returns as the voice of Jack Carver, and this time around Jack has fresh girlfriend and is settling down back on the islands while doing some illegal handiwork on the side.
A few new vehicles and weapons accompany Jack, along with a hot new babe named Kade. There are notable updates in the map editor, like auto-snap sniper ladders and zip lines. In multiplayer mode you can create your own map, and publish it online so that other gamers can play on your creation. What’s better than knowing that multiple players are fighting to play on the awesome map that you created?
If you’ve never played a Far Cry game, then there are a few things you should know before you begin. It started on the PC, and had vast open environments on which you could roam freely. It was fast paced, and often frustrating at times. It rivaled other games on the market at the time of its release. Thus, Far Cry Instincts Evolution caters to the many gamers who were waiting for a sequel. The AI is not as smart as it was on the PC, and the environments are not as expanded as they were either, but it’s enough to keep gamers challenged and interested. Read on to find all the details of Far Cry Instincts Evolution.
FCIE has the same controls as FCI, so veteran gamers will feel right at home with the control scheme. The game features an option menu because the reaction of the look command can be a bit too much at times. As for the overall gameplay of FCIE, the only additions that the sequel boasts are a few more hours of solo campaigning mixed with a fun multiplayer mode.
The seek and secure mode is a new addition in the sequel. The object of the mode is to seek and take control of a relay station, and maintain capture of it for a certain amount of time. The team that can hold the station for the time allotted wins that round. It’s a nice addition to the variety of modes of play available in the game.
The environments in FCIE are stunning when you look at them from afar. Once you step closer to the scenery, there is much to be desired. The texture quality is low once you actually take a closer look at the foliage. However, the game does not disappoint in the graphics area with lush foliage and amazing water environments. Downfalls of the game are that the framerate plummets in some sequences of extreme action and combat. The larger, open environments of the game also put a killer strain on the big, black box’s engine.
While a nice jungle themed soundtrack accompanies the gameplay, FCIE does borrow many of its sound effects from its predecessor. The panting of Jack while he’s running in the jungle, the firing of gun blasts and explosions, the rustling of bushes and trees, the excruciating sounds of bones crushing, all taken from the previous game, or recreated to sound exactly the same. An upside of the audio is that Kade sounds sexy as hell compared to Jack’s usually scruffy voice.
Basically, Far Cry Instinct Evolution is more of an expansion pack of Far Cry Instincts rather than an installment. A little over eight hours of game play and a multiplayer mode coupled with a few new maps is what makes up this game. If you are into XBox Live and love online gaming, than give this game a go. If you are going solo, then there are better games available for your $29.99.
