Generally speaking, Unreal Championship 2 (UC2) is a solidly constructed combat game. The game works to combine first person shooters with tense battle scenes. The designers of this game manage to create a unique and nearly seamless fusion between the single shooter element of the game and grandly sketched combat situations and battles.
It is important to note that UC2 is not a story driven game. Rather, it is a game that focuses on high-energy conflict in the form of engaging battles and intense combat. Overall, the game is not designed for a single player interested in complex plots. Rather, the game is best enjoyed with multiple players, including through a strong online engagement.
As mentioned, UC2 is a game best enjoyed with friends. Through the multiple player mode, there are 40 different map variations, 40 different combat and battle zones. In other words, the variety that can be found in the general structure of the game combined with the different influences multiple players bring to the board render UC2 a game that players will not soon tire of. The extensive variety will keep the game interesting for multiple players for a long time.
Online play can be frantic. You truly need to be on your toes to keep up with the rapid fire pace of the online mode of play. The only noticeable downside to the online mode of play occurs when a new match is being uploaded. That process can take longer than expected. (However, considering the frenetic pace of play, a little down time may not be such a bad thing when all is said and done.)
The single player mode of UC2 is solid. (But, again, as has been noted, the real strength of the game is found in its multiplayer, particularly online, modes.)
The single mode scheme provides a player with three gaming options: Ascension Rites, Tournament and Challenges. The storylines associated with these three options, particularly with Ascension Rites, actually are rather intriguing and interesting. The combat presented via each option is challenging and exciting.
For gamers looking for a challenge from computer foes, UC2 doesn’t disappoint at all. In fact, the AI is provides a more than adequate challenge to repeated moves and the computer cronies are almost never particularly easy to defeat.
The overall graphics scheme of UC2 is excellent. Obviously, a considerable amount of development time has been spent creating rich, interesting graphics on all levels of the game. Plus, gamers can now switch between first person or third person perspective.
The architecture used within the game is an interesting and unusual combination of different styling -- Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The net result is the creation of a rich, literally beautiful graphic background for the pitched battles that take place throughout the game.
Equal care has been taken creating the various characters in the game as well. The detailing of each character is commendable.
In the gaming industry, Epic has set itself apart as the creator of dramatic sound in its products. UC2 confirms that statement. The game succeeds in creating music, and related sounds, that perfectly match the tone and pitch of the action on your Xbox screen. Rather than distract, the sound created for this game highlights, underscores and extenuates the epic contests and visual imagery of the game.
Some of the voiceovers done for the characters can seem a tad over the top. However, this does not distract from the game (…at least not too often, or too much).
Overall, UC2 is a great game for people who enjoy and excel at video gaming. Unreal Championship 2 is a basic proposition; it is not necessarily a flashy game like others closely associated with films and celebrities. However, it offers gameplay with plenty of excitement and significant challenges for an avid gamer to overcome.
The storyline generally is thin but it is nicely offset by tremendously crafted combat scenes and battles. The only other problem with the actual combat scenes is trying to develop an effective way to excel from one level to the next. The multiple weapons provided to a player (upwards to eight guns), makes mastery over combat within the game a difficult proposition.
With all of that said, UC2 is a good choice for a gamer who enjoys tense combat and challenging battle situations… a rock solid option.
UC2 for Xbox currently retails for $29.99US at the time of writing.
