Game Description

Mutant Storm Reloaded is another Xbox Live title that focuses on providing an enjoyable arcade-like experience. This shooter, which shamelessly ignores the concept of a storyline, is not particularly innovative, but nevertheless boasts a couple of welcome extras. Its main feature is how the game actually adapts to the player’s abilities, thereby rendering it enjoyable to anyone. It also uses well-conceived mechanics and a smooth control to make it thoroughly fun.

Mutant Storm Reloaded Gameplay

Mutant Storm Reloaded is a typical top-down shooter where your objective is to control a ship. With zillions of opponents converging towards you in a kamikaze fashion, you then need to blast them using your ship’s weapons. Although you start with rather average weapons, you can however collect more powerful but temporary counterparts, such as a laser or a homing missile, in each level. You can also rely on your handful of bombs to instantly get rid of a large group of foes before more enemies come barging in.

The game has two playing modes even for a single player. Indeed, the Adventure mode strikes out as the main one where you beat an insane amount of levels whose difficulty keeps increasing. With 89 levels to complete, it’s an extremely long continuous adventure, and one that can be particularly arduous in the later stages. However, in addition to this regular mode, there is also the Tally mode, which instead focuses on providing a level-by-level experience, but disregards the existence of power-ups. You can however choose your difficulty setting in the second mode, which is easier to beat since you can save between levels while the first alternative is auto-saved only after every ten stages. A cooperative two-player mode is also available where two friends can help each other.

Your primary task in either mode is to destroy all your opponents while at the same time ensuring that you don’t die. In Adventure mode, you will obtain bonuses that include point multipliers. There is additionally a percentage status that increases as you beat a particular stage without ever dying. Should this percentage reach the fabled 100, you will then earn a belt. These belts range from yellow to black, similarly to their martial art counterparts, and indicate your various achievements. Reloaded’s best feature is how the map changes in each level, thus requiring you to adapt to the next lay-out.

You will need to be constantly alert because Mutant Storm Reloaded is a challenging shooter. The enemy count is ridiculously high, and grabbing the power-ups as early as possible is often the key to victory. Moreover, the game uses a continually evolving enemy roster that prevents the game from being repetitive. Each level will be inhabited by new foes with different attacking patterns, and the difficulty level is noticeably increased in Adventure mode.

You cannot simply rely on the patterns you have analyzed previously, as doing so merely leaves you vulnerable. There is a constant need to be alert and watch out for all the subtle variations to your enemies’ behavior. It is nevertheless a pity that Mutant Storm Reloaded incorporates loading times between levels, as these unfortunately break the otherwise frantic atmosphere established throughout the game.

Mutant Storm Reloaded Controls

The lighting effects are particularly dazzling and beautiful to watch. The camera even zooms in as the enemy count decreases, and this gives the game an overly enticing atmosphere.
